The event, run in conjunction with the Channel Seven Mandurah Crab Fest, combines the adrenalin-pumping sports of waterskiing, wakeboarding, freestyle motocross, BMX and skateboarding, with premium food and entertainment on the Mandurah foreshore.
For the third time in Australia, the City of Mandurah will host the International Waterski and Wakeboard Federation World Cup as part of the Action Sports Games.
Among the 128 competitors are world champion wakeboarders Australian Harley Clifford and Raimi Merritt from the USA, as well as the world number one waterski jumper Freddy Krueger.
Tourism Minister Liza Harvey said both the Channel Seven Mandurah Crab Fest and Action Sports Games showed Mandurah and the Peel region to thousands of local spectators and an international audience watching the games online.
“These events are a great coup for the local community as they draw visitors and provide significant social and economic benefits,” Mrs Harvey said.
“Last year about 130,000 people attended the weekend of events. This year’s line-up and high calibre of national and international competitors is sure to attract an equally impressive number of people to the area.”
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the State Government was proud to sponsor Actions Sports Games through Tourism WA’s Regional Events Program, which is funded by Royalties for Regions.
“With the assistance of Royalties for Regions funding, major events are being hosted throughout the State, delivering benefits to communities and in this case thrilling locals and visitors alike,” he said.
Mr Redman said the Regional Events Program was developed to attract major events to regional areas in WA that generated State-wide, national and international attention, and enhanced the social fabric of regional life.
